  Our Guide To Wild Birds

Wild Bird seed is by far the most popular feed available for wild birds.

However peanuts, niger seed, suet treats and mealworms are becoming very popular.

Mealworms are especially useful in attracting robins, tits, wrens, blackbirds and thrushes to the garden. They are high in protein and fats, so necessary for birds busy lives.

Balls of fat and suet treats are important as the fat provides warmth for birds during cold days.

Niger seed is useful in attracting small birds to the garden, and can even be placed in a feeder.

Peanuts are still very popular for wild birds, but it is important that they are placed in a feeder, as young birds cannot digest them. Alternatively buy peanut granules

Try to ensure that peanuts are only fed via mesh feeders as baby birdscannot digest whole peanuts.

Store wild bird food in a dry place, out of reach of rodents.

Any food that is not eaten within one-two days should be removed and replaced with fresh.

Do not feed highly salted foods or whole bacon, uncooked rice & disiccated coconut.

Clean all feeders and feeding surfaces to prevent bacteria build up.

Wear gloves and wash your hands throughly after handling feeders, as many diseases in wild bird are transmittable.

Only use 'Quality Assured' peanuts, which are tested for aflatoxin, a fungus that can be harmful to birds.

Nest boxes should be in a quiet, safe place in the garden, out of reach of predators, sheltered from the elements.

Clean boxes in September and January.

Do not disturb boxes between February and August.
