Our Guide To Rabbits

Rabbits make a good friendly
clean intelligent family pets.

Rabbits enjoy human company
preferring to sit beside you
rather than be picked up.

They love having their nose,
muzzle & ears rubbed or gently
scratched.

Rabbits love attention and
become lonely if isolated.

Hutches should be raised
off the floor, insulated,
waterproof and in a draught
free positionout of
direct sunlight.

Hutches must be protected
from mice, rats, cats,
dogs and foxes.

Hutches should be made
of wood, have a solid floor,
separatesleeping quarters
and a wire front.

The front of the hutch
should be covered at night.

The water bottle should
be protected from frost
during the winter.

Rabbits will wash themselves
but do love to be groomed daily,
this helps to create a
rewarding bond.

Avoid sudden changes in
diet and temperature.

Bedding should always be
kept clean & dry.

Rabbits teeth continue to
grow throughout their lives
so require mineral stones,
rabbit pellets and chew toys
always to be available.
If the bottom teeth should grow
over the top teeth they will
need to have them
trimmed at the vets.

Rabbits should be allowed to
run freely in a rabbit run on
grass during nice weather.

Signs of illness in a rabbit are
lose of appetite, listless,
coughing runny eyes,
sneezing or diarrhoea.

Fresh hay forms the basis of
their diet and should always be
available along with
fresh drinking water.

A good quality rabbit pellet
or mix containing a coccidiostat
should be given with
fresh fruit and vegetables which
should be introduced to the diet
slowly and given sparingly
as a treat.

It is normal behaviour for
rabbits to eat a certain
amount of their own droppings
this is called coprophagy.

Housing rabbits indoors
is not uncommon however
when allowed to roam the
house they should be
supervised to avoid any
unwanted chewing of wires.

An indoor hutch or cage should
be of suitable size for the
rabbit when fully grown.

As rabbits invariable
soil the same spot it is easy to
litter train them.
